Death of a Dynasty II: The Return of the King is the seventeenth and final episode of Series 2 and the twenty seventh episode of Prehistoric Earth: A Natural History.
Synopsis[]
After the team survived the hellish seas of the Cretaceous, they travel across the lands to rescue the last dinosaurs left on the Earth, including the most famous dinosaur of all time: Tyrannosaurus. However, their time is limited as a meteorite makes a collusion course towards Earth and brings an end to the age of the dinosaurs.
Plot[]
Having already returned to the Cretaceous period, Allen and the team prepares to leave it's deadly seas and head inland to find the last dinosaurs, including the most famous one of all: Tyrannosaurus Rex. But they have limited amount of time as a meteorite was on a collusion course to Earth and mark the end of the dinosaurs. They travel through the Cretaceous forests where they came across one of the most famous dinosaurs: Pachycephalosaurus where a herd of them were browsing on leaves while one of them investigates the team. They gather the Pachycephalosaurus herd and gets them to the park along with herd of Stygimoloch. After they rescue the two pachycephalosaur herds, the team continues on to find and rescue T-Rex.
They soon came across a herd of sauropods called Alamosaurus, Allen points out that ever since the Jurassic ended 80 million years earlier, sauropods have declined leaving titanosaurs the only species left. The team rescues the herd of sauropods and puts them into the sauropod enclosure. The team soon comes across another species of pachycephalosaur called Dracorex which a herd of them were browsing while drinking water from a stream. The team rescues the herd and goes to find through Montana's prehistoric forest to find what their looking for. They soon stumbles across a Tyrannosaurus nest where Rebecca spots a small primitive mammal called Didelphodon raiding for dinosaur eggs until it was killed by a large female Tyrannosaurus much to Allen's surprise.
The team sets up camp on a volcanic landscape as Allen and Rebecca spots a male Tyrannosaurus looking for food across the land. Allen, his dog Caine, and Rebecca follows the large theropod towards some thermal springs where it picked up a carcass of a dinosaurs where they eventually loses it as the T-Rex walks away. They travel through the forest where they arrive at a lake where they spot a flock of ornithopod dinosaurs called Thescelosaurus drinking water from it. While Allen and Rebecca were getting the Thescelosaurus flock to the park, they were soon attacked by a pack of dromaeosaurs called Dakotaraptor that were hunting for food. They get the pack of raptors back to the park where they were put into the raptor enclosure while the Thescelosaurus flock were put into their enclosure.
After rescuing a smaller species of tyrannosaur called Nanotyrannus, Allen and Rebecca suddenly comes across a large armored ankylosaur with a massive club on it's tail called Ankylosaurus browsing on leaves. Allen and Rebecca rescues a few Ankylosaurus and put them into the Ankylosaur enclosure. Later they arrive at another T-Rex nest (one that has been abandoned) where they found a Didelphodon burrowing into it and rolls one of the eggs out of the nest. The small marsupial breaks the egg open and a dead T-Rex embryo comes out. Another Didelphodon appears after it's picked up the scent of the embryo and eventually the two small mammals fights each other before running off into the forest.
Allen tells Rebecca that many dinosaur embryos are not surviving in the environment due to acidic pollution prevent their eggshells from forming properly which is another factor that is threatening the survival of the last of the dinosaurs. After gathering a few other Cretaceous mammals like Meniscoessus, Purgatorius, and Gypsonictops, Allen and Rebecca found a track of dinosaur footprints on the ground as Caine sniffs at them and realizes that it's belongs to a theropod. They soon spots something hiding in the bushes as Caine growls at it. Coming into the a view behind the bushes was a flock of ornithomimid dinosaurs called Ornithomimus grazing on vegetation. Allen takes off his shoes so he can rescue an Ornithomimus and the same way he did with Ostriches back in the present.
Allen slowly gets close to the flock until they run away as he grabs one of the Ornithomimus'. However Allen and Rebecca were soon confronted by a pack of T-Rexes led by the same female from the coastline. Caine barks at them until he ran off after they roared at the two humans and eventually chases them down. Luckliy they manage to lose the pack and decided to name the female leader of the T-Rex pack Sue, as Allen and Rebecca, return to the camp with Caine. The next morning as Allen was at a lake washing his face while Caine drinks from it, they encounter a herd of Triceratops, one of the most famous dinosaurs to be discovered.
The herd came to browse on leaves while drinking from the lake, as Allen watches them until he saw some T-Rex track not too far away. Later Allen and Rebecca follows the tracks so they can find the T-Rex pack they encountered. Soon they stumble across a herd of another species of ceratopsian dinosaurs related to Triceratops called Torosaurus, one of the other prey items of Tyrannosaurus. Allen notices that it's the rutting season for some of the males as he watches some of them flush blood into their frills to display. However Allen saw two other male Torosaurus engaging in a terrific battle which ended with one of the males breaking one of it's horns.
After watching the Torosaurus herd, Allen and Rebecca arrives at at the T-Rex territory where they found dinosaur bones scattered around the area and found the pack led by Sue who also has five chicks who hatched awhile back before their arrival in the Late Cretaceous and names two of them Terrence and Matilda. Once the pack leaves, Allen and Rebecca goes to find any eggs only to find the T-Rex eggs empty and soon found a few Didelphodon roaming the area. They rescue a few Didelphodon and even found a prehistoric snake called Dinilysia hunting for prey which frightens Rebecca a bit. Allen rescues the snake and brings back to the park, as he also reminds Rebecca that snake recently evolved from the reptilian family as lizards and eventually became specialized to hunt warm-blooded animals such as mammals.
Later they came across a herd of large hadrosaurs called Edmontosaurus migrating to find lush vegetation. Allen tells Rebecca that throughout the Late Cretaceous, hadrosaurs had been successful group of dinosaurs just like the sauropods were during the Jurassic. They rescue the Edmontosaurus herd and puts them into the park's hadrosaur enclosure with other hadrosaurs as they try to rescue other dinosaurs in the environment. Allen and Becca soon found Sue and her pack preparing to attack a Triceratops herd which was browsing and drinking water. The herd retreats while some of the members goes into defensive mode and forms a wall to protect the some of the youngsters as they fight the Tyrannosaur pack.
Allen sets the portal and gets the Triceratops herd back to the park as one of the T-Rexes kills a herd member with it's jaws. He names the female leader of the herd Sarah while naming her teenage hatchling Theo as they get the herd to the park's ceratopsian enclosure. After rescuing the herd of Triceratops, Allen goes back to rescue Sue and her T-Rex pack. They soon found a Triceratops corpse floating down a river after the attack as they saw Sue heading towards it. The team built a palisade of large logs and pieces of wood so they can get Sue and her pack to the park as they won't go over the uneven ground as they set up the time portal.
However they found another flock of Ornithomimus that were running right towards them and saw another T-Rex. The team opens the portal and gets the flocks of ornithomimid dinosaurs to the park along with a flock of Struthiomimus, another species of ornithomimid dinosaurs where both species were put into the Ostrich Enclosure with other ornithopod dinosaurs. Meanwhile back in the forests of Late Cretaceous Montana, Ruby goes hunting for big game until she saw T-Rex footprints in the dirt which she follows. Ruby came across a Tyrannosaurus with a dead Ornithomimus in it's mouth as the huge theropod spots her and chases after her. She luckliy manage to escape as the huge dinosaur loses her scent and retreats back into the Cretaceous forests as Ruby continues hunting.
Later Allen and Rebecca arrives at a lake where they saw a huge pterosaur called Quetzalcoatlus catching fish from the lake. Allen informs Rebecca that pterosaurs had been in decline leaving large ones like Pteranodon and Quetzalcoatlus the only species left on Earth as birds were starting flourish around the environment. They soon found a large crocodilian called Thoracosaurus waiting to attack the large pterosaur as it prepares to take flight. Allen and Rebecca rescues a group of Thoracosaurus and puts them into the park's crocodilian enclosure and goes to rescue Quetzalcoatlus and bring it to the park. They soon found a group of Quetzalcoatlus and brings them to the park where they were taken to the park's Aviary so they can reside with the park's other pterosaurs they rescued.
Later that night, Allen and the team sees some shooting stars in the sky and realizes that the asteroid was on it's collusion course with Earth. They soon comes across another herd of Torosaurus browsing until they were attacked by a pack of Dakotaraptors who manage to isolate one of the youngsters. The next morning, the raptors manages to kill the young Torosaurus much to the team's shock as they rescue the herd along with two Triceratops from the prorsus species which they somehow went through the portal and takes them to the ceratopsian enclosure as they go rescue Sue's pack of Tyrannosaurus. Later in the forest, Ruby stumbles across an Ankylosaurus making it's way through the environment and starts shooting only for it to react aggressively towards her and goes into attack mode as it swings it's clubbed tail causing her to return with the team. The team breaks camp and arrives a stagment pool where they found a herd of Edmontosaurus and a few Alamosaurus browsing on leaves while drinking from the pool where a Thoracosaurus was waiting to strike.
Suddenly the herd of hadrosaurs breaks up when they senses danger as the titanosaur herd gets nervous and eventually Sue appears and kills one of the Edmontosaurus with her massive jaws. The rest of the pack arrives and starts to feed on the dead dinosaurs as Allen sets up the portal and gets them to the park. Suddenly the massive meteorite slams into the Earth as Allen and the team opens the portal and gets Sue and her pack back to the park. They watch from the otherside of the portal at terrifying destruction of the meteor and realizes that this was the end of the dinosaurs. Allen tells Joanna that they finally got Tyrannosaurus back to the park and informs that their rescue mission on dinosaurs has ended as many of them have been given their second chance in the present.
Later Rebecca shows her true feeling to Allen and tells him that she doesn't regret coming to the park for a second. They both share a romantic kiss and watch as many of the park's resident animals enjoy themselves.
“ | Now with our mission to rescue dinosaurs complete, we eventually take care of many prehistoric animals we rescued. One of the dinosaurs will soon lay a clutch of eggs that will hatch into the first baby dinosaurs in 65 million years. Join us next time as we begin to rescue the animals living in a world after the dinosaurs one of them being a group of animals that took over the Earth: Mammals. | „ |
