Sauroposeidon (name meaning: Lizard Earthquake God) is a genus of sauropod dinosaur known from several incomplete specimens including a bone bed and fossilized trackways that have been found in the U.S. states of Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Texas.
In the Series 2 episode "Master of the Skies", several Sauroposeidons were brought to the park from Early Cretaceous North America, 127 million years ago. They reside in the Sauropod Savannah enclosure with many of their fellow sauropod relatives.
Facts[]
Era & Discovery[]
Sauroposeidon lived during the Early Cretaceous period, around 127 – 110 million years ago. Perhaps one of the largest animals of its environment, it shared its environment with dinosaurs and other creatures like Iguanodon as well as Polacanthus, Ornithocheirus, Deinonychus, and the mighty Utahraptor.
Physical Attributes[]
Sauroposeidon stood 34 meters tall and weighed 60 tons, making them the tallest dinosaur that had ever existed.
Like Brachiosaurus, Sauroposeidon's massive size would dwarf any living animal today including modern elephants. However despite their large size, they had very small brains and mostly did everything by instinct. Like many sauropods, Sauroposeidon laid in their eggs in a nest and leaves them. They had long necks to reach the treetops and would eat anything that grows on them.
Their only defense was their size, because when they become adults their massive bodies protects them from predators. However juveniles who often lived separately from the herd were prey items for predators such as Deinonychus.
